Stewardship
PIRC and the Stewardship Code
Set up by a group of pension funds in 1986, PIRC has now provided institutional shareholders with advice on how to exercise their ownership responsibilities for almost 25 years. As an organisation, we are long-standing advocates of the idea that institutional shareowners have responsibilities as well as rights in respect of the companies they own.
Whilst PIRC is not a shareholder in its own right it works with institutional investors from the UK and elsewhere to encourage investee companies to adhere to high standards of governance and social responsibility. We therefore fully support the Stewardship Code as an initiative to ensure an effective relationship between companies and their owners.
In practical terms, PIRC provides both voting and engagement services to institutional shareowners. We therefore consider that we are subject to the Stewardship Code in its entirety.
